History
- In 1972, the firm of Richard M. Kelso and Associates began the practice of consulting engineering. Early clients included small architectural firms and consequently most of the early projects were small. A significant and challenging commission was the Knoxville Zoo, with its varied water and wastewater requirements.
- By 1977, the firm had progressed to large industrial projects such as The Strut/Nacelle Facility for Boeing in Wichita. In 1979, projects for the 1982 World's Fair began. The Quality Inn, a high-rise downtown motel, was the largest of the many projects accomplished.
- The practice continued on a wide range of projects during the early 1980's, with schools, restaurants, apartments, offices, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities and processes being successfully completed.
- In 1983, John Regen joined the firm, which became Kelso-Regen Associates, Inc. In 1997 Gary Bergeron became an Associate in the Firm. In 2015, Jonathan Crye became a partner in the firm. The practice has expanded to clients throughout the Southeast. The firm is performing work nationwide for clients such as Pilot/Flying J LLC Travel Centers, Kroger and Food City grocery stores, Fresenius Medical Centers, Cato, Shoe Show, IHOP, Hardee’s, Chipotle’s and Old Navy. Pilot/Flying J Travel Centers designs since 1988 include food franchises for McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, Subway, Arby’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Blimpie’s, Kountry Kitchen, Harvest Grille, Dairy Queen, and Del Taco. Principals are currently licensed in 45 states.
Our Goal
Kelso-Regen Associates, Inc. continues to specialize in mechanical engineering, which includes plumbing and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems for buildings. Plumbing systems for swimming pools, wastewater treatment, potable water, animal facilities, fuel handling, food service, and a variety of industrial services have been designed. Heating systems from steam boilers to solar hot water systems have been completed. Cooling systems engineered by the firm range from hospital emergency rooms, a Pilot/Flying J data center designed for up to 800 tons cooling capacity to sophisticated variable volume systems for critical laboratory environments.
With an increasing concern for indoor air quality, ventilation systems have become a more important part of the practice. Industrial ventilation expertise is routinely applied for the protection of workers and the environment. Our design work includes several LEED projects where we have performed the LEED building energy analysis and completed the LEED on-line templates. We have also added three Revit BIM workstations to our office and received three days of training for our personnel.
